What is Trisomy 18?
Edwards’ Syndrome, also commonly known as Trisomy 18, is when an error occurs on the 18th chromosome causing pieces of the chromosome to replicate and/or disappear. This mismanagement of genetic material happens during conception, and in most cases, randomly. This natural occurrence can happen on other chromosomes (such as in cases of Down Syndrome or Patau Syndrome), but Edwards’ Syndrome specifically effects the 18th Chromosome.
